Students Follow World Sea Voyage Online
WorldWise, an organization that uses technology and tall ships to educate school children worldwide, has launched its third world voyage, which will be chronicled at www.beworldwise.org. The tall ship Picton Castle departed June 9 from Lunenberg, Nova Scotia, to travel around the world, visiting such places as Madagascar and Fiji. The yearlong voyage is being chronicled on the site so that teachers and students can log on and learn about the various places and cultures being visited. Students can learn what it is like to live and work aboard a ship, as well as find out about the culture of each destination as the crew g'es ashore to deliver educational materials to needy schools. Students can also interact with the crew via e-mail or by engaging in occasional live chats.
The Web site allows students to follow the voyage through the ship's logs, a tracking map, snapshots and 15-second mini-movies that let students see the sights and hear the sounds the crew experiences along the way. There's also a detailed section of the site dedicated to the ship and its history, as well as games for students. In addition, the site features a host of teacher resources such as a list of book titles that can be used to learn more about the places the crew g'es and things they do; a list of related links; and curriculum, such as "Exploring the Ocean Realm," which includes complete lesson plans and activities to use in the classroom.
