Parallels Desktop Automates Windows Installations on the Mac

11.02.2006—Parallels Inc. has released an update to its popular Parallels Desktop software. Parallels is a tool that allows Mac users to run Windows, Linux and other operating systems on their Intel-based Macs. Unlike Apple’s Boot Camp, Parallels Desktop does not require a restart to run Windows on the Mac.
Parallels allows for multiple operating systems to run at the same time, enabling interaction between applications and operating system environments. And. unlike previous software-based solutions for the Mac, Parallels does not emulate x86 hardware; Windows and Linux run natively on any Intel-based Mac. Parallels simply provides the environment in which those other operating systems can run on top of the Mac OS.

The latest 2.2.1970.0 build provides further enhancements to the installation of Microsoft Windows. It also includes enhancements to networking and interaction between Windows and Mac OS X.
On the installation front, the new version now includes Installation Assistant. This utility automates the entire process of installing Windows, including selecting partitions, determining configurations, etc. It also installs Parallels Tools, which is a suite of utilities tat enables file sharing, copying and pasting between OSes, synchronizes various settings and improves networking.
In addition, version 2.2.1970.0 adds a new “shared networking” mode that enables virtual machines to share a Mac’s Internet connection without any further configuration required.
Parallels 2.2.1970.0 is available now for $79.95 for the full version. A 15-day free evaluation version is also available. Parallels requires any Intel-based Mac.
