CES: Toshiba Unveils Desktop HD DVD Writer

01.08.2007—Toshiba Storage Device Division has announced the first half-height HD DVD writer, an HD DVD system targeted toward desktop applications. The new model will be shown off this week at the CES convention in Las Vegas being held Jan. 9 through 11.
The new SD-H903A supports HD DVD media and also provides read and write support for legacy formats, including standard DVDs and CDs. HD DVD provides up to 30 GB of storage capacity, compared with 4.7 GB on standard DVD media, which allows HD DVD media to store up to eight hours of HD DVD-encoded video. The SD-H903A features a Serial ATA (SATA) interface, which is used in all current Mac systems and many higher-end PCs. The unit integrates a blue-violet laser diode to read and write HD DVD-R discs and supports high-density HD DVD-ROM discs.
Specifications include:
- Write formats: 1x HD DVD-R single-layer (SL), 1x HD DVD-R dual-layer (DL), 8x DVD±R SL, 2.4x DVD±R DL, 2x to 4x DVD-RW, 2.4x to 4x DVD+RW, 2x to 3x DVD-RAM, 16x CD-R, 4x CD-RW, 10x High-Speed CD-RW, 10x Ultra-Speed CD-RW;
- Read formats: 1x HD DVD-ROM (SL and DL), 1x HD-DVD-R (SL and DL), 8x DVD-ROM SL, 6x DVD-ROM DL. 8x DVD±R SL, 6x DVD±R DL, 6x DVD±RW, 2x to 3x DVD-RAM, 24x CD-ROM, 8x to 12x CD-DA, 24x CD-r/RW;
- 8 MB buffer;
- Dimensions: 41.5 mm (H) x 144 mm (W) x 184 mm (D).
Toshiba will be showing the new drive this week at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) at the Las Vegas Convention Center at booth 12832. Volume shipments of the SD-H903A are scheduled to start in February.
