9 Schools Deploy Anonymous Reporting

Nine schools in four states--Connecticut, Virginia, Alabama, and Mississippi--have recently adopted Talk About It, an anonymous reporting system from K-12 technology provider AnComm, bringing the total number of schools in the United States using the service to 93.
Talk About It is a hosted online system that allows students to report incidents of violence, threats, bullying, depression, and other issues to teachers and administrators anonymously. It also provides e-mail capabilities for students and allows members of a school community to participate in polls, with some schools choosing to use the polling system for class elections and the like.
AnComm recently released aggregate results from 52 schools in the 2006/2007 school year, revealing the top-10 categories of incidents reported by students anonymously. These include:
- Stress (15 percent);
- Bullying (10 percent);
- Depression (8 percent);
- Family problems (4 percent);
- Fighting (4 percent);
- Peer pressure (3 percent);
- Drugs (2 percent);
- Cheating (2 percent);
- Self-injury (2 percent); and
- Suicide (2 percent).
It should be noted that in the case of imminent physical danger to a student (such as a suicide note), administrators can obtain a student's information from AnComm in order to intervene.
The new schools adopting Talk About It in Connecticut, Virginia, Alabama, and Mississippi will deploy the systems for the 2007/2008 school year. They include: New Fairfield High School (Connecticut), Fieldale-Collinsville Middle School (Virginia), Laurel Park Middle School (Virginia), Brewton Middle School (Alabama), TR Miller High School (Alabama), South Delta Middle School (Mississippi), South Delta High School (Mississippi), West Bolivar Middle School (Mississippi), and West Bolivar High School (Mississippi).
