Hawaii DOE Consolidates Professional Development Statewide

The Hawaii Department of Education (HDOE) is streamlining its professional development operations for educators with the creation of the statewide PDE3 eLearning and Professional Development Portal. The portal is a collaboration between HDOE's Office of Human Resources and Office of Information Technology Services. Education technology provider TrueNorthLogic has been contracted to help develop the portal.

PDE3 ("Professional Development Experiences that Educate, Empower, Excel") is being developed to support HDOE's Act 51, according to TrueNorthLogic, which is also known as the "Reinventing Education Act for the Children of Hawaii." it brings the human resources office's services under one technology umbrella, combining professional development and training, new teacher induction and mentoring, administrative benchmarking, and communication. That's just the first phase of the implementation.

"By streamlining our Office of Human Resource's workflow and professional development processes, the PDE3 eLearning and PD portal will empower school personnel to manage their own professional growth and support the implementation of sustainable strategies for improving teacher quality," said Dale Asami, Project Manager.  He continued, "It creates a single, personalized online entry point for each staff member and makes it much easier for us to maintain standardized processes as well as a 'continuous improvement' and accountability mindset among all personnel."

In subsequent phases, the project will also entail new career development resources and induction and mentoring services to "support planning and predictive modeling for retirement and financial/academic planning, which is required by all principals under the state strategy in Act51," according to a statement issued by TrueNorthLogic.

HDOE employs some 30,000 K-12 teachers, administrators, and other staff.
