Pearson Debuts ELL Professional Development Program

##AUTHORSPLIT##<--->

Pearson last week introduced a new professional development program for teachers of English language learners (or "English learners") called "Enhancing Instruction for ELs with The SIOP Model." The program is designed to help instructors teach academic subjects to ELL students while focusing on English language development.

SIOP, or "Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol," was developed over a seven-year period during a research project for the Center for Research on Education, Diversity & Excellence in an effort to "identify key practices for sheltered instruction and develop a professional development model for teachers to effectively use sheltered instruction," according to Pearson. "Sheltered instruction" seeks to teach content to ELL students in a comprehensible manner while also encouraging English language development.

Pearson's "Enhancing Instruction for ELs with The SIOP Model" is a year-round hosted professional development service designed to allow districts to build sheltered instruction models tailored to their individual needs. It includes training options for administrators and teachers and can be delivered on site or in a hybrid online/on site model. Features of the program include:

  • Workshops covering the needs of English language learners;
  • SIOP training, implementation and coaching;
  • Classroom observation and feedback; and
  • Follow-up workshops and progress reviews.
