NSTA Teacher Site Bolstered by $3 Million Grant

The National Science Teachers Association this week announced that it's received a two-year, $3 million grant from the GE Foundation to support the NSTA Learning Center.

The NSTA Learning Center is a portal that provides learning resources for science teachers, including journal articles, chapters from NSTA books, Webinars, professional development tools, and others.

"Research has shown that quality teaching is the most important factor affecting student achievement in science. However, as a country, we do very little to support and enhance science teaching," said Gerry Wheeler, executive director of the NSTA, in a statement released Monday. "Through the NSTA Learning Center, science teachers can get the professional development they need to increase their science-content proficiency and improve their teaching skills."

NSTA said that it will serve as "science advisor" to the GE Foundation in support of the program, helping it with planning and implementation for the foundation's Developing Futures in Education Program. The program provides professional development support for science and math teachers and is also aimed at improving student learning in science and math. NSTA will also provide assessment services to help determine the progress of school districts participating in the program.
