Exposure to Malware on the Rise

Web security services firm ScanSafe reported that the total number of Web-based malware blocks has increased by 87 percent in July 2008 compared to the previous month. Specifically, the first two weeks in July have shown an extraordinarily high volume of malware blocks. ScanSafe sells online security services, which scan Web requests from its customers and blocks malicious content.

New York School To Control Unmanaged Devices with Mirage NAC

Northwood School, a college preparatory school in Lake Placid, New York, has selected a network access control product from Mirage Networks to secure the unmanaged devices that students use to access its network. Such devices include laptops, PDAs, game consoles, and other IP-enabled endpoints that may not comply with school configuration standards.

Prep School Eliminates Unauthorized HTTPS Requests with Cymphonix

Trinity Preparatory School in Winter Park, FL has integrated the Cymphonix Network Composer DC30X as its sole content filtering solution and is now able to prioritize its bandwidth and prevent students from bypassing its firewall using HTTPS protocols.

Alabama District Graduates to Application Whitelisting

Trussville City School District in Alabama has selected Bit9 Parity to secure its computers, replacing application control technology from Lumension Security. The new school district, with five schools and 4,150 students, created a state-of-the art, technology-focused curriculum that uses blogs, podcasts, and other Web 2.0 approaches as part of the learning process. A majority of teachers and students in the sixth grade have been issued laptop computers, which introduced security challenges.

Georgia District Struggling with Web Proxies and Network Invisibility Implements iTrust

Dougherty County Schools in Albany, GA has selected DeepNines iTrust to secure its students and control its network. The 17,000-student district found that despite its investment in a content filter, students were using Web proxies and other circumvention techniques to access inappropriate material online during school hours. The district also needed a solution that could provide granular network control.

Google's Chrome Web browser--complete with quirky marketing comic book--made a splash when announced Tuesday, but what a difference a day makes. On Wednesday, proof-of-concept bugs affecting the Internet app were disclosed. Chrome is still early in its first public beta.
