Wisconsin District To Launch Online School

Howard-Suamico School District of Green Bay, WI, has announced it will partner with Kaplan Virtual Education to launch Bay Port iAcademy (BPiA) to provide full- and part-time online education opportunities to middle school and high school students throughout the state. Since BPiA will be part of a public school district, all students will be able to attend tuition free.

The courses at BPiA will conform to Wisconsin state curriculum standards, with certified teachers leading the online instruction, and will use a range of educational technologies, including audio, video, online teaching tools, and interactive whiteboards. Teachers will also be available to clarify material and answer questions via IM, e-mail, or telephone.

"This collaboration with Kaplan Virtual Education is a way to expand our course offerings and help students learn in an innovative and flexible way," said Damian LaCroix, district superintendent. "We're excited to provide students with a new and personalized online education option."

BPiA will have online coursework available to home-schooled and homebound students, returning students wishing to complete their diplomas, and those who are seeking courses more advanced than those currently offered at their traditional schools--in addition to students currently enrolled in grades 6 through 12 in the district.

Open enrollment for the 2010-11 school year will take place from Feb. 1 through Feb. 19. Further information is available here.
