The HP Slate 2 will ship later this month for $699.

HP has debuted the Slate 2, a replacement for the Slate 500 Windows-based tablet introduced last year. The new model, according to HP, offers improvements in the areas of performance, security, and multitouch capabilities while shaving $100 off the price tag of its predecessor.

Sporting an 8.9-inch multitouch display, the 1.5-pound Slate 2 is powered by an Intel Atom Z670 processor, with mSATA-based solid state flash storage, for better performance, faster boot times, and improved battery life (up to six hours), HP reported. It also offers a "Swype" keyboard designed for keyboard input with a continuous swiping motion using a stylus or finger.

Other features include:

  • A front-facing VGA camera/webcam;
  • 3 megapixel rear camera;
  • SRS Premium Sound (an audio technology from SRS Labs designed for more immersive sound from smaller speakers);
  • TPM Embedded Security Chip;
  • Computrace Pro support in BIOS;
  • SD Card slot;
  • Two USB ports;
  • HDMI port;
  • Optional Bluetooth keyboard and case; and
  • Support for the HP Slate Digital Pen.

HP's Slate 2 is expected to be available this month. It will start at $699. Additional details will be available on HP's site.

In related news, HP has also debuted a new netbook for education, the HP 3115m. Built on an AMD E450 dual-core Fusion processor with AMD Radeon HD 6320 graphics, the 3115m offers an 11.6-inch backlit LED display, 11.5 hours of battery life, and an HP webcam. Additional details weren't available at press time.

The HP 3115m is expected to ship Nov. 11. It will sell for $429. Additional information will be available on HP's notebook portal.
