Illinois District To Stream Security Footage to Smartphones

An Illinois district will be expanding its video surveillance efforts using video server products from Lextech Labs to bolster school security. The expansion includes mobile access so that security and school personnel can view video feeds on smartphones. Naperville School District 203 has a two-year plan that includes installations of LexRay Server at two high schools as well as replacement of some video cameras in those locations that aren't compatible with the server software.

LexRay Server captures video from multiple cameras and displays it to viewers on mobile platforms. Mobile users can also control the cameras from their devices to move the view side to side or up and down or to zoom in or out.

According to local news coverage, the district expects to spend $80,000 this summer for the servers and camera replacements. An additional $100,000, which is part of a budget that will be up for approval in July, would be used to replace additional cameras and to install cameras at junior high schools. All of the work is expected to be done by the start of the 2012-2013 school year.

The mobile support will enable public safety officers and school personnel to gain access to the security cameras in the event of an emergency. Access will also be made available to the Naperville Police Department, which uses the same setup to monitor the city's downtown area and its parking garages.
