Edmodo Ups API Ante with Root-1 Acquisition
Edmodo has acquired app platform and design company Root-1, in a move intended to build on Edmodo's recent success with an open API strategy.
The K-12 social learning platform launched its API and platform for third party developers last year and has since tripled its number of users to more than 18 million while currently supporting more than 400 apps, according to a company release.
Over that timeframe the workforce at Edmodo has doubled, according to the release, and will now include the four co-founders of Root-1, known recently for developing the OpenMinds platform, which enabled teachers to customize education apps with their own content.
"We're excited to welcome the Root-1 team and have them join our efforts to expand the education app market," said Nic Borg, CEO and co-founder of Edmodo, in a release. "Gone are the days when the seven-year textbook purchasing cycle dominated education and controlled which content could reach the classroom."
Edmodo Apps was launched at SXSWedu last March and the company has centered its presence at this year's conference, March 5-7, around app development, according to a release. Highlights of the conference schedule for Edmodo include a "Digital Content in the 21st Century Classroom" panel moderated by Edmodo COO Crystal Hutter.
