Georgia District Refreshes Computers Systemwide in Preparation for Common Core

Troup County School System in Georgia has deployed new laptops and desktop computers at all 20 of its schools. According to a news release, the new computers are intended to help the district's students and teachers prepare to meet Common Core State Standards.

With this deployment, the district has ended its long-standing commitment to HP and implemented Dell Latitude e5530 laptops, Latitude 6430 ultrabooks, and Optiplex 3010 desktop computers at its elementary, middle, and high schools. “Dell’s combination of high-performance computers at an affordable price helps us provide more of our students and teachers the tools they need to make teaching and learning more interactive and engaging,” said Josh Moneypenny, technology director of Troup County School System, in a prepared statement.

The Dell Latitude e5530 laptops feature a 15.6-inch LED-backlit display and Intel Core processor. The Latitude 6430 ultrabooks are feature a 14-inch display and Intel Core processor. Ultrabooks are typically designed to be smaller, lighter-weight versions of laptops while retaining the performance of a regular laptop. The Optiplex 3010 desktop computers feature an Intel Core processor and Energy Star rating.

As part of the agreement, Core ATG will provide the district with digital etching service, asset tagging, and offsite disposal of all cardboard and plastic shipping and packaging materials. Core ATG will also remove retired computers from the district, wipe hard drive data in accordance with Department of Defense standards, and dispose of electronic waste with the help of a local certified specialist.

The new computers were funded with assistance from the Microsoft Shape the Future Program, which lowered the cost of the operating system and software, enabling the district to afford more computers for students, according to the news release.

Troup County School System serves nearly 13,000 elementary, middle, and high school students in the the communities of Hogansville, LaGrange, and West Point, Georgia.
