HMH Launches Assessment Suite for School Readiness

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's Riverside division has launched an online suite of tools to assess school readiness and development for children from birth to age 8. Riverside Early Assessments of Learning, developed by early childhood expert Bruce Bracken, helps determine which areas children need to focus on to prepare to enter the classroom.

Riverside Early Assessments of Learning, which is designed to meet Common Core, Head Start, and federal and state standards, provides surveys and other assessment tools for Head Start, Early Childhood Special Education, and Kindergarten Readiness to determine children's skill and development levels. Three versions are available: Head Start/Early Head Start, for birth through 5 years, 11 months; Special Education, for birth through 7 years, 11 months; and Kindergarten Readiness, for birth through 7 years, 11 months.

Features of the platform include:

  • Data administration tools, which allow the user to generate individualized or group instructional plans and monitor students' developmental and academic progress;
  • The ability to share data about children's progress;
  • A portfolio builder to keep records of pictures, observations, notes, etc.; and
  • Content in specific academic and developmental areas to help students grow.

According to the Rolling Meadows, IL-based company, it will add another section to the suite, called the Real Observation Scale, in the near future. This feature will include ratings scales based on state's educational standards.
