Michigan Charter School Offers Online Speech Therapy

Muskegon Heights Public School Academy System (MI) has found a new way to deliver speech therapy services to students with special needs. The charter school district, a member of Mosaica Education, has moved from on-site speech therapy to an online model.

MHPSAS has adopted PresenceLearning's online speech therapy program. Approximately 60 students, in elementary, middle school and high school, are using the new service, which was implemented at the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year.

"We have definitely seen some breakthroughs," said Kirk Sanford, a paraprofessional at the district, in a prepared statement. Sanford works with students during the online sessions. "A normal session lasts 30 minutes, but students have actually asked them to go for longer. Based on individual student needs, the sessions cover a lot of topics and techniques in a really unique and engaging way."
