National Science Teachers Association Kicks off 2014 Teacher Awards

The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) has opened its 2014 Teacher Awards Program, with 20 different awards for more than 50 teachers at stake.

"Many of the awards recognize teachers for their development and implementation of unique science programs and curricula, while others honor individuals who show outstanding leadership and dedication to the profession, including NSTA's prestigious Robert H. Carleton Award," according to a news release.

Prizes include cash, grants, school supplies and materials and trips to NSTA's conferences. Eligibility varies from award to award and the deadline for submissions is November 30, 2014.

This year's program includes several new awards, including:

• The Northrop Grumman Foundation Excellence in Engineering Education Award, which honors K-12 public school science or technology teachers in engineering education;
• The Shell Urban Science Educators Development Award, for K-12 science teachers at urban schools;
• The Faraday Science Communicator Award, which is open to individuals who are not teachers or professors, such as those who work in a museum, zoo or aquarium;
• The Vernier Technology Awards will recognize one K-5 teacher, two 6-8 teachers, three 9-12 teachers and one college-level instructor for the innovative use of data collection technology;
• The Pasco STEM Educator Awards, for 6-12 STEM teachers; and
• The Wendell G. Mohling Outstanding Aerospace Educator Award.

"Not enough people know about the amazing benefits of NSTA's Teacher Awards," said NSTA President Juliana Texley, in a prepared statement. "There are countless educators who are giving so much to help their students succeed in STEM education and we want to acknowledge and celebrate them for their efforts and contributions to the teaching profession."
