Lecture Capture

Instructure Canvas Now Integrates With Lecture Capture App

Instructure Canvas now has a new lecture capture and video solution in its Open LTI App Collection. Collaaj, from a company of the same name, was recently certified to work within the Web-based learning management solution. LTI — Learning Tools Interoperability — is an IMS Global specification that enables applications to work within LMSs.

Once the program is installed within the Canvas environment, Collaaj lets the instructor record any combination of video, slide, presentation or audio. According to the company, the application can record from three different cameras simultaneously. The software then crawls through PowerPoint presentations (including notes) and extracts and indexes text so that students who are viewing the video can search on a given term and find it within the lecture recording.

Once a recording is done, it's "live encoded" for immediate availability by viewers and uploaded to a cloud-based or on-premise "Campus YouTube" repository for the school.

Collaaj apps are available in the iTunes app store for both the iPhone and iPad. Both allow users to record videos using the device's built-in camera.

"This partnership will enable higher education institutions to record PowerPoint presentations with text indexing, including screen captures as well as multiple simultaneous camera inputs, and manage all of their videos right from Canvas," said Melissa Loble, vice president of partners and programs for Instructure. "The integration is very elegant and I am sure will be welcomed by our customers!"

Collaaj has been used by educators at Sunnyvale School District in California, Mossyrock School District in Washington and La Marque Independent School District in Texas, among other school systems.
