Pinellas County Schools of Largo, FL has announced it has deployed more than 7,000 netbooks. Of these, 446 have been specifically allocated to the Melrose Elementary Center for Journalism and Multimedia, a K-5 magnet school.

Pam Howard is no stranger to technology-based reading programs. In fact, this principal believes in such applications so much that she brings them with her when she takes on positions at new schools. For example, when she accepted the position of principal at Burleson Elementary in El Paso, TX, in 2008, Howard knew it wouldn't be long before a high number of the school's 337 students would be shifting to a technology-based reading program she'd previously used at three different schools.

Wisconsin District To Launch Online School

Howard-Suamico School District of Green Bay, WI, has announced it will partner with Kaplan Virtual Education to launch Bay Port iAcademy (BPiA) to provide full- and part-time online education opportunities to middle school and high school students throughout the state. Since BPiA will be part of a public school district, all students will be able to attend tuition free.

Kaltura Releases Video Extension for Moodle and Joomla

Kaltura has released video extensions for both Moodle, an open source course management system, and Joomla, an open source content management platform. The extensions allow site-builders for either application to manipulate video and other rich media on their sites, including content management, syndication, monetization, transcoding, uploading, importing, and editing.

Reazon Systems Launches Sakai Module for Student Assessment

Reazon Systems has released a student assessment module that works with the Sakai open source course management system. iRubric for Sakai integrates with Sakai CLE (collaborative learning environment) to perform rubric generation, assessment, and reporting. Users can access the functionality directly from the Sakai gradebook.
