Ed Tech Awards & Contests

During its 2005 National Education Summit in October, the National Education Summit Committee will bestow the inaugural Inabeth Miller Learning and Technology Award to an individual who has made major contributions in instructional or communications technology with a focus on K-16, museum, or other learning environments. The winner will be chosen from online nominations (visit www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=410501233667) by an eight-member committee comprised of technology and education professionals. The award commemorates Miller who was a nationally recognized technology innovator and, prior to her death in 2003, VP of Business Development for CELT Corp.

Full-time science instructors in K-12 and higher education who demonstrate innovative uses of data-collection technology with a computer, graphing calculator, or other handheld device in the classroom are encouraged to apply for the Vernier Software & Technology/National Science Teachers Association Technology Award. Each of the seven grant winners will receive a $1,000 cash award, $1,000 in Vernier equipment, and $1,000 toward travel and expenses to attend NSTA’s National Convention in 2006. Apply online until Oct. 14 at www.vernier.com/grants.

After-School All-Stars (ASAS; www.afterschoolallstars.org), which provides comprehensive out-of-school programs to keep children safe and help them achieve in school and in life, celebrated the launch of its national campaign and new online newsletter by offering subscribers a chance to win a trip to Hollywood to meet its national spokesperson, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Technology provider Kintera (www.kintera.com) helped ASAS by providing the needed tools to update its Web site and create the newsletter, which ASAS hopes will help spread the word about the organization; build its list of supporters; and provide fun, informational content for parents and children.
