A School Security Outlook for 2009

It has been six months since technology product and service supplier CDW-G and marketing services firm Quality Education Data issued their second-annual school security index, which measures how K-12 IT and facilities professionals rate their districts' cyber security and physical safety measures. In the last round of results, which were published in May, the quality of cyber security had dropped, while the state of physical security had improved.

Malware Finds New Ways To Beat Up Computer Users in 2008

Malware and other unwanted content is finding new ways to reach into users' mailboxes, according to the MessageLabs Intelligence 2008 Security Report. This was owing largely to botnets, which accounted for some 90 percent of malicious or unwanted mail.

Leon County Public Schools Deploys viaRadio Warning System

Florida's Leon County Public Schools has activated an emergency warning system from viaRadio Corp. The viaRadio receivers, known as HEARO, are now in the county's 24 elementary schools, nine middle schools, six high schools, six special/alternative schools, five charter schools, and various administrative offices. The school district plans to use the warning system to inform the schools' administration of lock downs, weather emergencies, and other pertinent information. It can also be used for internal communication among employees.

Lightspeed, Eagle Integrate Student Information Management with School Network Security

Lightspeed Systems, which develops network security software for the education market, and Eagle Software, which develops Web-based administrative software for California schools, have integrated their products to enable schools to better monitor online user activity and support student safety measures. As a result, the Aeries Student Information System from Eagle Software features reports of students' Internet usage that are obtained from Total Traffic Control, Lightspeed's network security and monitoring solution.

UK School Adopts Appliance-based NAC Security

Sutton Valence School in Kent in the United Kingdom is turning to an appliance-based solution for network access control. Sutton Valence, which comprises a senior school and a preparatory school, has deployed the CounterACT NAC appliance from ForeScout Technologies across its network.
