PBS Teacherline To Offer Advanced Teacher Certification Course Online
Online professional development provider PBS Teacherline has teamed with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) to offer an online course for K-12 teachers pursuing National Board Certification, an nationally recognized advanced teaching certification. This certification, already held by 82,000 educators throughout the United States, is part of the national effort to reform education by "developing, recognizing and retaining great teachers."
Studies by the National Research Council and the National Academies have shown that board certified teachers have stronger records of dedication and leadership, as well as student achievement. "National Board Certified Teachers are proven leaders in education. By having them serve as candidate support providers, schools and school districts will embed a commitment of professional teaching standards beyond the classroom," said Joseph A. Aguerrebere, president and CEO of NBPTS. "Their leadership skills are critical in helping other teachers as they face the challenge of the National Board Certification process."
The National Board Certification exam is an advanced performance assessment. It consists of 10 parts, including a written evaluation of content knowledge, individual video portfolios, and an analysis of classroom practice. The Candidate Support Provider (CSP) online course being offered by PBS Teacherline is a six-week, 30-hour course in which participants will learn:
- Fundamentals of ethical candidate support;
- Processes used for scoring portfolio entries and assessment center exercises;
- Adult learning principles and their application;
- Effective use of communication skills; and
- How to locate elements of evidence and provide meaningful feedback to candidates to help them deepen their level of thinking about their teaching practices.
The course will be offered for the first time this summer, beginning June 23. Enrollment is $295, and further information and registration requirements can be found here.
