Smarter Balanced Leaders Reelected

Three members of the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium executive committee have been reelected to their posts, including EC Co-Chair Joseph Martineau, executive director at the Michigan Department of Education's Bureau of Assessment and Accountability.

Smarter Balanced is one of two state consortia developing assessments around Common Core State Standards, commonly known as "next-generation assessments," which are being designed for delivery on electronic devices. The group comprises K-12 leaders, heads of state education agencies, higher education leaders, and others from 25 member states. The assessments being developed by Smarter Balanced and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) are expected to be delivered for the first time nationwide during the 2014-2015 school year.

Dan Hupp and Deborah Sigman have also been reelected to the executive committee. Hupp is director of standards and assessment in the Maine Department of Education. Sigman is deputy superintendent of public instruction for the California Department of Education.

"Joseph, Dan, and Deb have been instrumental in guiding the development of the Smarter Balanced assessment system," said Co-Chair Carissa Miller in a prepared statement. "Their continued service on the Executive Committee reflects the deep commitment of Smarter Balanced member states to creating high-quality assessments that provide information and tools to help improve teaching and learning in the classroom."

SBAC's nine-member executive committee oversees development of those assessments and manages the group's funding, according to Smarter Balanced.
