STEM Education Company Offers Summer Data-Collection Training for Educators

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education company Vernier Software and Technology will hold a series of training classes this summer to help educators integrate data-collection technology into their science curriculum.

The $99 classes are one full-day session each, and are taking place in 25 different locations. According to the Vernier Web site, the course fee includes:

• Six hours of training;
• Light lunch;
• Workshop Training Manual on CD;
• Savings on a workshop package; and
• Choice of one Vernier lab book or $50 gift certificate toward purchase

After an introductory overview, educators will be able to pick which hardware and software they would like to perform lab experiments with and a Vernier training specialist will be on hand to assist. Available courses of study for these labs include Biology, Chemistry, Environmental/Earth Science, K-8 Science education, and Physics, with specialized workshops for instruments such as the Goniometer, Vernier Optical DO Probe, Radiation Monitors, and Vernier Projectile Launcher.

The classes also feature the possibility of providing two graduate credit hours to attendees through Portland State University Center for Science Education’s online graduate course, SCI 510: Electronic Data Collection and Analysis for Science Educators. The course requirements include attending a qualifying Vernier workshop, submitting a formal write-up of an inquiry-based experiment you create, and developing, implementing, and assessing a lesson involving electronic data collection.
