Landon School Improves Backup Service While Boosting Virtual Infrastructure Performance

Landon School in Bethesda, MD has implemented a new backup and replication solution and a new storage solution that work together to optimize data protection operations for the school's virtual machine environment.

The school recently moved its IT infrastructure to a virtual machine environment to simplify management and cut costs, but backup and replication operations were severely affecting the performance of the virtual infrastructure.

"To eliminate performance degradation of the backup and replication operations, we began to seek new solutions for dynamic storage scalability that would have the flexibility to support heavy I/O loads when we needed them," said Fernando Sabio, CCNA and principal for Concentus, the schools' IT service provider, in a prepared statement.

Landon School and Concentus evaluated several possible solutions before deciding on the Grid, a storage solution from Gridstore that has been optimized for Veeam VM backups. Veeam Backup and Replication, which has been optimized for VMware and Hyper-V backups, provides file-level granular restoration capabilities and a Windows-centric environment. Meanwhile, the Grid uses server-side virtual controller (SVC) technology to provide custom-fit storage that is optimized for applications across physical and virtual environments. It also combines building blocks of storage with intelligent vControllers, so Landon School can independently scale capacity, input/output, and processing, without disrupting normal operations.

The combined solution provides the school with a scalable, modern virtual machine data center backup infrastructure that saves money on power and cooling, and the school estimated that the data recovery process following a catastrophic event would now require hours rather than days.

Landon School is an independent, nonsectarian day school for boys in Bethesda, MD, serving over 680 students in grades three through 12, and employing over 125 faculty members.

Further information about the Grid can be found on Gridstore's site.
