Queens Middle School Opens Blended Learning 'School Within a School'

Junior High School 189 Daniel Carter Beard in Queens has launched a blended learning program to provide students elective courses. The program will serve students in grades 6 through 8.

The school chose to partner with Connections Learning by Pearson for implementation. Courses offered through Connections will include foreign languages, entrepreneurship, and Juilliard eLearning, the conservatory's group of online music courses. The school will loan students a laptop with access to Connexus, the education management system for Connections Learning.

The blended program is designed to provide flexibility of pace and location, greater personalization, and access to a wider range of courses than was previously available, according to a release.

"We are committed to providing our students with the best learning experiences to meet their individual needs and interests," said Cindy Diaz-Burgos, principal of JHS 189 Daniel Carter Beard, in a release. "Blended learning enables us to expand our offerings with an extensive collection of exciting courses. We can't wait for our students to explore this new option."
