Google RISE Awards Offer Funding To Promote K-12 Computer Science

The deadline for the 2014 Google RISE (Roots in Science & Engineering) Awards is Sept. 30.

Applications are open to broad-reaching organizations worldwide that promote K-12 computer science education to encourage students to become creators, rather than just consumers, of technological innovations. Recipients are selected based on their focus on underrepresented minorities. The awards particularly favor organizations aimed at helping girls in computer science and that have the potential to reach more girls around the world.

Award recipients will receive between $15,000 and $50,000 in funding. They will become members of the community of current and past Google RISE partners and receive an invitation to the annual global summit. They will also have the opportunity to consult with Google experts about technical tools and organizational development for a one year period, and in some cases they may receive volunteer support from Google engineers.

For their part, award recipients will be required to submit quarterly progress reports, demonstrate growth in their program's reach over the year, and share resources, ideas, and expertise with other members of the Google RISE community.

The Google RISE Awards were created in 2010. Last year, 30 organizations received the awards, including nine from the United States. Recipients of the 2014 Google RISE Awards will be announced in December.
