Discovery Offers Common Core Academies Free Through End of School Year

Discovery Education is offering its Common Core-focused teacher professional development academies free through the 2013-2014 school year.

Discovery's Common Core Academies are in-person workshops that provide hands-on training for educators on using technology to integrate Common Core State standards into classroom instruction. There are also academies designed for school administrators focused on leadership and teacher support.

"Designed specifically to support educators using digital media to enhance instruction and engage students, the Common Core Academies provide practical strategies and tactics that support long-term action planning as well as immediate implementation," according to Discovery.

The academies focus on the fundamentals of instruction, leadership, assessment, and curriculum and cover three key areas: Common Core English Language Arts for teachers, Common Core Math for teachers, and leadership and support strategies for administrators.

"The Discovery Education Common Core Academy is a powerful professional development event. The wealth of strategies, tactics and resources I learned during the Academy helped me leverage the digital tools in my classroom to quickly change my instruction to meet the new standards," said Benjamin Sung, fifth-grade math and science teacher at Natick Public Schools in Massachusetts, in a statement released by Discovery. "In addition, it's a great forum for discussing practical and immediate implementation ideas and collaborating with other educators from different districts and schools."

The first round of free Common Core Academies will begin Oct. 18 in locations in nine states: Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, and Pennsylvania. Additional locations will be added throughout the school year.

Complete details can be found on Discovery's Common Core Academies portal.
