OverDrive Intros Streaming Video Service for Schools
Schools and libraries will soon be able to stream video to computers and mobile devices, at no charge.
OverDrive, a provider of digital books, audiobooks, music and video, has rolled out a pilot program of its new streaming video service at the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL). The service allows users to borrow videos from the library for viewing on any Web-connected device. The company plan to offer the program to its full network of partner schools and libraries.
Library users can access video two ways, either from their library's e-media platform or through OverDrive Media Station, touchscreen e-book kiosks located in the library. With OverDrive Media Station, users can search for and sample video titles then send it to their device – e-mail, QR code, or SMS -- for checkout. As with other services from the company, titles can be borrowed for a specific length of time, after which they expire from the user's device.
The company plans to roll out pilots with additional libraries this month. A full list of available video titles can be viewed at OverDrive's site.
