NASBE Awards Grants to 4 States

4/9/2007—The National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) has awarded grants to four states: Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, and Tennessee. The purpose of the grants is to "enhance the communications systems between their student state board members and the peers they represent across their state."

Said Brenda Welburn, NASBE Executive Director: "Student members are an important voice in state board of education deliberations. But once outside the board room, student leaders often have limited opportunities to effectively communicate their opinions, insights, and board decisions to other students--the very constituency most affected by a state board's actions. We are pleased to provide financial support to these four state boards of education to improve their student communication systems."

The $2,000, six-month grants were awarded through a competitive process, with winners selected for their communications strategies. According to NASBE, these were:

  • Maryland: a focus on communicating with student representatives on local school boards;
  • Massachusetts: development of online tools for student discussions;
  • Montana: administration of online surveys to obtain feedback on issues and broadcasting of radio PSAs about student membership on the state board; and
  • Tennessee: establishment of student blogs, as well as a new student space within the board's website.

Funding for the grants came through NASBE's Student Leadership Initiative, funded by the MetLife Foundation.
