Elementary Students Reach Out to Neighborhood with Web Project

Fourth-graders at Pleasant Glade Elementary School in Washington will be developing a Web site for their neighborhood using a $10,000 grant from the Qwest Foundation, which was awarded to teachers Tamara Campbell, Ann Chenhall, and Nora Strauch this week.

According to Qwest, students will use the funds for creating a neighborhood Web site, including taking pictures with digital cameras, recoding video interviews, launching a neighborhood mapping project, and exploring other aspects of the community. They'll also be learning how to edit QuickTime video footage, build a Web site, and convey information through blogs.

"Many of our students do not have access to information technology outside of our school," Pleasant Glade's Strauch said in a statement released Monday. "We feel it is our duty as public school teachers to facilitate the richest opportunities and experiences possible for each individual child."

The work of the fourth graders will also be shared with students in first, second, and third grades.

Qwest has also awarded several other grants through its Teachers and Technology program this month. You can read more about those here. Further information about the Qwest Foundation in education can be found here.
