21st Century Classroom

With a new administration taking over in Washington D.C., educators and technologists alike are redoubling their emphasis on 21st Century Classrooms. In the world of elementary education, this means a renewed commitment to familiarizing students with the hardware, software and services that can prepare them to meet challenges of the new millennium. Most 21st Century Classroom initiatives also are designed to help students develop the ability to communicate, collaborate, think critically, utilize media to gather information and incorporate awareness of the world around them. To prepare for the campus of tomorrow, we all must act today.

RECONNECTING ONLINE

In the K-12 environment, where the right technology used in the right way can revolutionize a youngster's ability to learn for life, the 21st Century Classroom is the goal that drives everything.

Educators fantasize about the day where students walk into a classroom, pop open their laptops, connect wirelessly to the Internet and follow along as the instructor pulls in Internet resources to teach a lesson. They picture kids communicating with them privately via chat or using wikis, and pop quizzes literally popping up on individual screens to assess learning in real-time.

One By One

The notion of a 21st Century Classroom can mean different things to different technologists at different schools. At the Monroe County School District in Florida, the initiative revolves around 802.11a/g wireless connectivity, a laptop program and a host of resources for teachers to access online and share best practices about how to use the new technology.

According to Ken St. James, the district’s director of instructional technology, the lynchpin of the Monroe County solution is a series of versatile laptops and tablet computers from HP (www.hp.com).

On the surface, the laptop program looks like just about any other program in the country. Behind the scenes, however, the story is markedly different.
