Turning Technologies To Expand Lineup with Assessments
Turning Technology prepares to expand its education assessment product line with the recent acquisition of Totus' educational software program. Totus' technological solution will be released as VantagePoint, a Web-based data assessment software, and will accompany Turning Technology's TurningPoint, a real-time interactive assessment software.

DOE Software Study: Are the Numbers Flawed?
The United States Department of Education (ED) Thursday released the results of a study measuring the impact of math and reading software on student achievement. The results? "Test scores were not significantly higher in classrooms using selected reading and mathematics software products." This didn't sit well with organizations (or individuals) in education technology. Several responded to the study, denouncing the research as flawed or cautioning careful scrutiny of the data.

Scantron has launched into a partnership with Evans Newton Inc. (ENI) to develop new solutions for assessments and standards-based instruction. ENI is a developer of state-specific assessments.

Saxon Math Adds Assessment Generator
Saxon Publishers, a division of Harcourt Education, has introduced a new version of its Saxon Math program for elementary students. The latest release adds assessment tools and is expected to be available for fall 2007.

Arizona DOE Links with Lexile Framework
The Arizona Department of Education has inked a deal with MetaMetrics to link the state's "Instrument to Measure Standards" (AIMS) to the Lexile Framework for Reading. The agreement will impact about 500,000 students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 10 beginning in the 2007/2008 school year.

5 Districts Adopt SchoolNet's Performance Management System
SchoolNet, a developer of school performance management (SPM) systems, recently announced that five urban school districts have adopted its K-12 management solutions. The five districts will also be included in SchoolNet's National School Performance Network, where districts share practices and ideas at regional and national conferences.

Archdiocese Taps Learnia To Monitor Elementary School Students
The Archdiocese of New Orleans has selected San Antonio, TX-based test publisher Harcourt Assessment Inc.'s classroom assessment tool, Learnia, for its Orleans Parish elementary schools. The Archdiocese, one of the largest Catholic schools systems in the country, with 83 schools on 81 sites, will start testing with Learnia this month.

Math curriculum developer Carnegie Learning has introduced a Math Prep for the WASL, a prep course for Washington's 10th grade state exit exam, Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL).

NC High School Implements Classworks for Remediation
South View High School in North Carolina has implemented Classworks for remediation in core subject testing. Nearby Hoke County School District is also implementing Classworks in seven elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, and one early college.

New York City DOE Contracts with IBM for Student Data Management System
The New York City Department of Education has signed IBM to develop and deploy a new data management system for New York City Schools, which serves some 1.1 million students and employs more than 90,000 teachers. The system will be designed to measure student performance and progress in real time and provide that information to educators and parents.

Chapel Hill Adopts Scantron Achievement Series
Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools (CHCCS) in North Carolina has adopted Scantron's Achievement Series (AS) assessment tools. The district will use AS for standards-based formative testing in 15 schools, covering grades 3 through 12.

Texas District Uses Web-Based Assessment Solutions To Target Instruction
Monitoring student progress is key to helping students prepare for high stakes tests. In Channelview Independent School District (ISD), we used to make copies of released Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) tests and hand them out to be administered every six to nine weeks. Since the TAKS is now released every other year, however, it made it difficult to get good, valid, reliable tests to regularly measure student progress.

McGraw-Hill Releases Assessment Reporting System
CTB/McGraw-Hill (CTBMH) has released a new English- and Spanish-language assessment reporting system, LAS Links Report Pack. The new system provides reporting tools to analyze and present LAS Links assessment test results across classrooms, schools, and districts, according to CTBMH.
