Ace-Comm Provides Managed Mobility for Project K-Nect

Yesterday we reported on the launch of Project K-Nect, an initiative of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction that provides smart phones and service free of charge to at risk students to help increase their performance in school. We've learned since then that the project will incorporate security technologies from Ace-Comm in the phones.

Discovery Education announced this week that it has extended its contract with the Iowa Educators Consortium to distribute its unitedstreaming Plus service through the 2010/2011 school year. The deal sees unitedstreaming Plus distributed to all K-12 public and private schools in Iowa.

The majority of parents in the United States are unsatisfied with the way technology is implemented in K-12 schools. At the same time, the majority of educators say that students are more engaged in school work as a result of technology implementations and that there is a corresponding increase in student achievement, according to a new survey released this week by Project Tomorrow-NetDay.

Quantum Nabs $1 Million Grant for AI Tutoring Software

The U.S. Department of Education Institute of Education Sciences (IES) has granted Quantum Simulations, developers of artificial intelligence tutoring software, a $1 million grant. The grant will go to further developing Quantum's tutoring modules in chemistry for high school and college-level students.

Moderating and Ethics for the Classroom Instructional Blog

If I still taught in K-12, would I use a blog? It's one of those new technology tools that some of us digital immigrants might struggle to appreciate. Knowing what I do now, I probably would at least try one because blogs can support the collaborative element so important for peer to peer learning. While some blogs serve personal agendas, in education they can be used for student journals and portfolios, communication with parents and community members, faculty coaching, classroom management (e.g., posting assignments), and other knowledge management tools (Long, 2002) and enhancing classroom discussion.

Patent Office Grants D2L Reexam Request

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) this weekend granted Desire2Learn its request for a reexamination of Blackboard Inc.'s e-learning patent. Desire2Learn is, at present, the defendant in a patent-infringement lawsuit filed by Blackboard in July 2006.
