Michigan Middle Schools Get $385,000 for Math Improvement
The DTE Energy Foundation recently awarded $385,000 in grants to 20 middle schools in Michigan for programs aimed at improving students' math skills. The individual grants ranged from $4,000 to $50,000 and are the first to be awarded under the foundation's Math Enrichment Grant Program.

GenevaLogic Kicks Off Visionary Grants
Ed tech developer GenevaLogic has launched a new grant program called "GenevaLogic Visionary Grants." The grants award software and various benefits, including ISTE membership, to schools and individual teachers using Vision classroom management software in innovative ways.

Notion Donates Music Composition Software to Schools
Notion Music has donated 80 licenses of its pro music notation and composition software, Notion, to six schools and two colleges in North Carolina, totaling about $50,000 in software. The company had previously contributed 300 licenses to schools around the country earlier this year.

DoE UMass Dartmouth Grant Targets Math Education
The United States Department of Education has awarded the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth $2 million for a research effort aimed at improving math education. The funds will be used by the university's recently dedicated James J. Kaput Center for Research and Innovation in Mathematics Education to "examine new strategies to excite students about learning math, and increase the number and diversity of students in the math, science, and engineering pipeline," the university reported.

New York City DoE Takes 2007 Broad Prize
The Broad Foundation has awarded $500,000 to the winner of this year's Broad Prize for Urban Education, the New York City Department of Education. The foundation also awarded four finalists $125,000 each, including the Long Beach Unified School District (California), which was the winner of the 2003 Broad Prize.

AT&T Announces $1.5 MM Wireless Grant
The AT&T Foundation has launched a $1.5 million competitive grant program aimed at integrating wireless communications technologies into educational outreach programs. The 2007 AT&T Foundation Wireless Competitive Grant Program is open to public charities and "government instrumentalities" in the United States, excluding Alaska.

Interwrite, TeacherTube Launch School Video Contest
Interwrite Learning, an interactive classroom technology provider, has partnered up with education portal TeacherTube to launch a new video contest for K-12 schools. The contest will award $15,000 worth of equipment to the winners for a classroom makeover, as well as $1,000 cash and a party for the schools the winners attend.

NSF Kicks in $634K for STEM Education Development
The National Science Foundation has awarded the University of Rochester Warner School of Education $634,157 to "help encourage and train both talented undergraduate majors in science, technology, mathematics, and engineering and STEM professionals considering a career change to work as math and science teachers in high-need school districts," according to the university.

Districts Nab Principal Training Grants
The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation has awarded $8.3 million to two districts in the United States--Gwinnett County Public Schools in Georgia and Long Beach Unified School District in California--and to the University of Illinois at Chicago as part of an effort to deliver training and professional development to school principals.

Toshiba Launches Science and Math Grant
The Toshiba America Foundation this week announced new grant opportunities for K-12 schools in the area of science and math, part of $500,000 in grants the foundation awards to schools each year. The latest program, Science and Math Improvement Grant, will award up to $5,000 per applicant.

AVerMedia Kicks Off Video Contest
AVerMedia Technologies, a provider of multimedia and presentation tools, is launching a new contest for students, instructors, and administrators, calling on them to produce videos describing compelling classroom experiences made possible through the use of document cameras. The contest, dubbed the AVerVision Video Contest, is open to all North American K-12 schools, colleges, and universities.

Westinghouse Launches STEM Grant
Westinghouse Electric Co. has launched a new grant program for middle schools and high schools. Dubbed the "N-Visioning a Brighter Future Grant Program," the grant will award $1,000 each to five schools based on the merits of their proposed hands-on project with students.

Senate Considers ATTAIN Bill
The United States Senate late last week introduced S. 1996, its version of ATTAIN (Achievement Through Technology and Innovation), a bill to reauthorize the Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT) Act of 2001. ATTAIN was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives back in May.

Sprint Hands Out 80 Grants to K-12 Schools
Sprint this week announced the recipients of its 2007 Sprint Achievement Program, which provides grants to Kansas City-area K-12 educators as part of its community initiatives program. The grants ranged from $500 to $5,000 per school, totaling $347,000 for 80 schools. The Kansas City, Missouri School District (KCMSD) will receive the largest contribution, with 16 grants.

Blackboard To Give Away $25,000 Greenhouse Grant for Virtual Worlds
Learning management provider Blackboard is expanding its "Greenhouse" initiative into the area of immersive virtual learning. Through a new program, called the Greenhouse Grant for Virtual Worlds, a single recipient will receive a $25,000 for the integration of virtual worlds into teaching and learning.

Discovery Education and CDW Government (CDW-G) this week announced the winners in their 2007 Win a Wireless Lab sweepstakes. Each grand prize was valued at approximately $50,000. In total, some $300,000 in prizes was awarded to 45 educators from 22 states.

Olympus, Tool Factory Roll Out Grants
Olympus and Tool Factory have announced 43 new grant programs for educators being operated through a site called "Digital Wish." The site is a registry that allows teachers to make technology wishes available online so that donors can read about their needs and make donations to help fulfill their wishes. Those who register for the registry qualify for the 43 new technology grants from Olympus and Tool Factory, which include, among other things, a mobile digital camera lab.

Best Buy Teach Award Nominations Open
The Best Buy Teach award for K-12 schools has opened it's application window. According to Best Buy, winners will receive $2,000 to $10,000 for creative ideas for uses of technology in the classroom and need help to acquire the equipment "to extend, expand, or enhance current classroom curricula." Both schools and teachers will receive the awards.

San Diego Unified School District in Southern California was presented Friday with $250,000 in the Best Buy 2007 Teach Award. The program recognizes "exceptionally creative use of interactive technology to help make learning fun for K-12 students."

House Subcommittee Flat Funds EETT
Things are looking up for education technology funding in the United Sates House of Representatives. The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (LHHS) has approved an appropriations bill that would provide $272.25 million for Enhancing Education Through Technology (E2T2 or EETT), which had previously been recommended for zero-funding in the Bush administration's proposed 2008 budget.
