Community College Installs Fiber Network

Bay Networks has been chosen by Maryland-based Catonsville Community College, a 40,000 student institution, to provide the networking products for a campus-wide network. Based on a fiber optic infrastructure, the network incorporates Bay Networks' high-performance Wellfleet Backbone Concentrator Node (BCN) router to upgrade the campus' IBM mainframe, mini-computer and PC LAN environment to support a more flexible, high-speed collapsed backbone architecture. The multiprotocol BCN ensures backbone connectivity and interoperability while providing greater bandwidth as network traffic increases. Other products chosen include multiple SynOptics' Lattis System 5005 chassis hubs, Lattis System 2000 stackable hubs and Lattis 5000 network center hubs. The college also uses Bay Networks' Optivity network management system to manage the multiple hub devices. In addition to providing staff, faculty and students with access to shared computing resources and communication services, the computer network connects other colleges and selected secondary schools throughout the state.
