Pioneer Co-Sponsors K-12 Mentor Program
The Pioneer Mentor Program, sponsored by Pioneer New Media Technologies and Laser Learning Technologies, will follow a "teachers helping teachers" model to share examples of effective use of educational technology in the classroom.
After a nationwide search, the two firms chose 12 teachers to serve as mentors for one year. Appearing at a variety of conferences and workshops, mentors will describe easy steps for integrating technology into social studies, English, art and science curricula. In addition, mentors may assist Pioneer or its dealers in answering questions from teachers, librarians and administrators at exhibits.
Each mentor will be equipped with a Pioneer ExploreR package, consisting of a Pioneer CLD-2800 LaserDisc player, a barcode scanner and nine educational videodiscs (valued at $3,000). Mentors traveled to Colorado for a summer training seminar and will receive a stipend per conference attended.
"Many [teachers] have told us they need this type of help and support to make education ëcome to lifeí for their students," said Anne Winchester, president of Laser Learning Technologies, a multimedia consulting firm in Seattle.
More than 280 candidates for the Pioneer Mentor Program were evaluated for their familiarity with videodiscs, understanding of technology, teaching experience and availability during the school year. Pioneer New Media Technologies, Inc., Long Beach, CA, (800) LASERON, www.pioneerusa.com.
