If These Walls Could Talk

Talking Walls from Edmark is a literature-based program designed to help increase students’ awareness of world cultures, regions and societies. Intended for students in grades 4-8, it is based on the award-winning book Talking Walls, written by Margy Burns Knight and illustrated by Anne Sibley O’Brien. By presenting a collection of vivid stories about walls around the world, such as the Berlin Wall and Nelson Mandela’s prison walls, the program hopes to spark students’ interest in historical and cultural facts.

In addition to stories, the CD-ROM provides additional information for each wall in the form of pictures, timelines, video footage from CNN and more. It also offers direct Internet connections that give students easy access to more information on the Web. Each wall has a link to its own Web page where students can access appropriate education, reference and personal sites to help expand their knowledge of each wall and its respective region. Class activities are also provided to stimulate students’ thinking about the walls, their connections to past and present history and varying personal perspectives.
