Help Students with Career Guidance

A career guidance program called Magellan has been designed to help students become more aware of their strengths, their career options, and opportunities to interact with their communities. The program uses criterion-referenced surveys for skill assessment, comparing individuals directly to specific occupational skill requirements. The software includes a workbook for career planning, so that school districts don't have to design and write their own transition planning schedules. With Magellan and its curriculum guide and workbooks, students can explore different areas to develop their career profiles and focus on the steps necessary to achieve their long-range goals.

Since lessons need not be taught sequentially, when working with the program, students can skip from chapter to chapter or start and stop without losing focus or momentum. Every student, regardless of aptitude, can research every occupation in which he or she has an interest, whether or not they've considered it before. Since the program allows all levels of students to work independently with a minimum of supervision, each student can work at his or her own pace. Magellan also eases pressure from computer staff, since the program d'esn't require supervision at a highly technical level.
