Reciprocal, Inc. and Random House, Inc. have united to provide digital rights management (DRM) and digital clearinghouse services to schools, libraries, and other institutions. Reciprocal will act as a virtual wholesaler and will protect, host and manage e-book content for the Modern Library, an imprint of the Random House Trade Group. The new program will enable the distribution of e-books via a broad network of affinity and retail Web sites. Reciprocal will integrate affinity and retailer sites appropriate to the Modern Library list into the Reciprocal Digital Clearing Service.

The Modern Library offers more than 100 works of classic literature from their bound book backlist in electronic form. The distribution program allows for sites with limited or no commerce ability, as well as fully commerce-enabled retail sites, to distribute the digital classics. Through an alliance with Microsoft, Reciprocal will offer e-books in Microsoft Reader format, and integrate Microsoft's DRM solution into its Digital Clearinghouse infrastructure and its suite of offerings.
