Web-Based Professional Development Focuses on Science Teachers

The National Science Teachers Association Institute (www.nsta.org) has partnered with the American Museum of Natural History (http://learn.amnh.org) to provide Web-based professional development courses for K-12 science teachers. The Seminars on Science courses are based on a collection of resources collected by the museum's 200 scientists from its 32 million artifacts and specimens. The courses offered on the Web incorporate 3-D virtual specimens, in-field videos, and interactive simulations. Topics range from genetics, physics, biology and geology. Teachers can gain knowledge by conversing in online discussion boards and taking part in asynchronous activities hosted by museum researchers. Each six-week course aligns with national science education standards and can be taken for continuing education units or graduate credit.
