Math+Music program
Based on more than 30 years of research into learning and the brain, the nonprofit MIND Institute’s Math+Music program (www.mindinstitute.net) merges nonlanguage-based computer math games with specialized piano training to teach K-5 math, enhance problem-solving skills and raise test scores. The program, which has been used in California schools for the last six years, utilizes Spatial Temporal Animation Reasoning (STAR) software games that allow students to visualize the problem, identify the structure, and plan steps ahead in their mind to avoid obstacles and efficiently solve the problem. Since Math+Music is nonlanguage-based, students are able to learn math regardless of their proficiency in the English language. In addition, the music curriculum utilizes and develops the brain’s innate ability to recognize patterns and use symmetry.
