Event to focus on strategies for improving student performance.

THE CONSORTIUM for School Networking (CoSN) has announced a pre-conference workshop for educators attending its 2006 K-12 School Networking Conference and International Symposium from March 6 to March 9. The workshop, "An Integrated Approach to Increasing Student Performance: Focusing on Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and Beyond," will be held Sunday, March 5, from 1 pm to 5 pm at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, located just outside Washington, DC. Following the workshop will be a cocktail reception at the hotel that begins at 6 pm. And just as an incentive, the first 100 educators who sign up for and attend the gathering will receive a complimentary Sunday night stay at the host hotel.

The pre-conference workshop will feature experts from the government, business, and K-12 sectors, who will provide information about strategies for increasing student performance, offering a total solution in support of No Child Left Behind requirements. Representatives from school districts across the country also will be on hand to share best practices on achieving AYP. Several case studies will be highlighted at the event, including one by Jeanine Gendron, director of instructional technology for Broward County Public Schools (FL), which recently purchased 40,000 laptop computers for its students. Gendron will discuss the decision Broward County has made to integrate both commercial and district-developed materials into its schools, as well as discuss how the district has assisted commercial developers in improving their AYP programs. In addition, Geoffrey Fletcher of T.H.E. Journal and Rita Oates of Barry University (FL) will be assisting in program development and media coverage.

Attendees already registered for the 2006 K-12 School Networking Conference and International Symposium can register for this pre-conference at no additional cost. District staff who would like to share their insights at the pre-conference workshop should contact Wendy Weiler, the event coordinator for EduStrategies (www.edustrategies.net), at [email protected], or via phone at (508) 398-4968. Interested participants are also encouraged to register for the workshop at CoSN's Web site, www.k12schoolnetworking.org.
