4/11/2007—The FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) championships for high school and middle school students will be held this week in Atlanta, GA. The finalists from three different competitions will compete at the Georgia Dome and will also be eligible for more than $8 million in scholarships from multiple science and engineering schools.

The three FIRST competitions include:

  • Robotics Competition for high school students, an international competition that will test the students’ robots’ ability to hang inflated tubes on pegs configured in rows and columns on a 10-foot high structure;
  • LEGO league World Festival for middle school students, which require students to design, build and program LEGO robots to target “medicine” to reach a problem spot, manipulates individual “atoms” and operates a space elevator; and
  • Vex Challenge, a high school robotic competition with the same challenge as the first competition, but using a more accessible and affordable robotic kit.

FIRST is a non-profit public charity founded in 1989 to promote student interest in science, technology, engineering and math.
