Thinkfinity Kicks Off Asian-American Heritage Month

In observation of Asian-American Heritage Month, Thinkfinity.org has launched a website with free curriculum and educational resources about Asian history and culture. The website provides more than 50,000 lesson plans designed for K-12 students. Thinkfinity.org is a program operated through the Verizon Foundation.

"I always like to incorporate other cultures into my lesson plans to help break down barriers," said Jennifer Sharpe, a teacher at East Iredell middle School in Statesville, NC. "I'm using National Geographic's What is Asia? And MapMachine as part of an online scavenger hunt to find answers to questions about Asia's culture and history."

Website features include:

  • Playing with Shadows: an introduction to shadow puppetry that provides interactive resources and animation to teach students about shadow puppetry;
  • Following the Great Wall of China, a quiz about Chinese dynasties where right answers build the Great Wall of China; and
  • What is Asia? With curriculum for sixth through eighth graders designed to teach about Asian geography and culture.

Content on the website is provided by 11 different literacy and education organizations, such as the National Center for Family, National Council of Teachers of English, National Teachers of Mathematics, John F. Kennedy Center of Performing Arts, National Geographic Society, ProLiteracy Worldwide and Smithsonian National Museum of American Literacy.
