Where Does Access Control Fit in the K-12 Security Mix?
As a part of overall security initiatives in schools, electronic
access control is little used, according to a recent survey of school
resource officers (SROs) and administrators in K-12. The survey
revealed that only 28 percent of responding schools felt "extremely
confident" in their ability to ensure perimeter doors would securely
lock in case of an emergency lockdown; yet 91 percent of respondents
said it was critical to be able to lock down the school in the event
of an emergency.

Student Reports Intentional Security Breach in Greenville County
A student at a high school in South Carolina recently informed the
district's technology services department that he was able to bypass
security controls to gain unauthorized access to a district file
server containing students' names, addresses, Medicaid ID numbers, and
Social Security numbers.

Knox County Schools Get Boost in Security Funding Following School Shooting Death
A month and a day after a high school shooting left a student dead,
county commissioners in Knox County, TN have approved $195,000 for
additional security mechanisms at Knox County Schools, the district
where the shooting took place.

East Grand Rapids Public Schools Deploys Avenda User Management Software
East Grand Rapids Public Schools has selected a network access control
system from Avenda Systems to provide identity and resource management
across the district. The software manages who can log in into the
network and what those users can access. The district has about 2,800
students and is located in western Michigan.

Florida District Deploys Mimosa NearPoint for Data Archiving and eDiscovery
Orange County Public Schools in Florida said it plans to deploy Mimosa
NearPoint in an effort to streamline its e-mail archiving process. The
solution will also enhance the district's ability to search and
recover the stored data for a variety of applications, including
eDiscovery and litigation./p>

Symantec To Expand Cloud Presence with Purchase of MessageLabs
Symantec Corp. has agreed to acquire MessageLabs, a provider of online
messaging and Web security services, for about $695 million.
MessageLabs sells managed services for anti-spam, anti-virus, image
control, content filtering, instant messaging security, boundary and
policy encryption, and e-mail arching and backup. The acquisition is
scheduled to be completed before the end of the year.

Mercy High School Deploys Cymphonix Network Composer To Manage Use, Maintain Costs
Mercy High School in Farmington Hills, MI has selected Cymphonix
Network Composer DC30X to help manage content filtering and Internet
use reporting throughout the campus. The deployment has also helped
the school streamline its network usage and maintain its current
infrastructure expense, in spite of increasing its user population.
