Texas School District To Deploy Advanced Wireless Services

##AUTHORSPLIT##<--->

Verizon Business, a division of New York-based Verizon Communications, has partnered with the Sherman Independent School District to provide its schools advanced wireless communications services such as VoIP, wireless LANs, voice mail, and an expansion of the district's Ethernet network.

Sherman ISD, located in northeastern Texas near the Oklahoma border, has worked with Verizon for about 10 years. (See podcast here.) This expansion of the partnership, noted SISD Director of Technology Mignon Plyer, will include a system to "deliver voice mail to teachers, a feature that parents really like."

Also included in the new, expanded services are automated transaction processing for school cafeterias, library book tracking, wireless network access using laptops on school campuses, and distance learning activities in classrooms.

Funding for the expanded program is being supplemented through the federal E-rate program.
