Mississippi District Turns to Technology To Help Struggling Readers
When administrators and educators at the Lamar County School District in Mississippi realized that the number of struggling readers was increasing as the volume of resources available to teach reading at the secondary level were decreasing, they knew it was time to take action. They also knew that a technology-based solution just might be the most efficient, effective way to improve the situation.

National Academy of Sciences Expands Middle School Science Resource
iWASwondering.org, a science education project operated by the National Academy of Sciences, is expanding its online resources. The site--a companion to the WomenÕs Adventures in Science book series--has added a free moderated forum to help answer science questions and get students talking to each other about science.

U Michigan Brings K-12 Educational Software to Cell Phones
Engineers at the University of Michigan have developed software aimed at turning cell phones into educational tools for K-12 students. Why? According to developer Elliot Soloway, cell phones cost a fraction of what a laptop costs but can do just about anything a laptop can do. As an added bonus, students are already bringing the devices to school with them.

NEC Launches Short-Throw LCD Projectors
NEC Display Solutions of America this week launched two new short-throw projectors, the NP500WS and NP600S. Both are designed for mounting and projecting on the same wall with automatic keystone correction to produce square images.

Free Lecture Capture System Adds Desktop Broadcasting, Analytics
Panopto reported that it's gearing up to release CourseCast 2.1 this month, an update to the company's classroom capture system that's available free to academic users. Panopto will also release its new Blade Pack, a collection of addons for CourseCast that provide enhanced multimedia capabilities and analytics.

Moodle Point Update Tackles Security Vulnerabilities
Moodle has released updates to four of its most recent branches. The latest point update, 1.9.4, addresses security vulnerabilities and includes a number of minor fixes and enhancements. This round of upgrades also marks the end of development for the 1.6.x and 1.7.x branches.
