Providence School District Adopts Glencoe Math Programs

After an extensive review of curricula offered by a number of educational publishers, Providence Public School District in Providence, RI, has opted to purchase four high school mathematics programs from New York-based Glencoe/McGraw-Hill. The courses include Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and Advanced Mathematical Concepts: Precalculus with Applications.
Paula Shannon, director of K-12 teaching and learning PPSD, said that approximately 50 high school mathematics teachers in the district analyzed several research-based math programs and found that the Glencoe series best aligned to the Rhode Island Grade Span Expectations.
"As the district develops a core mathematics curriculum, it is imperative that we align the curriculum with research-based tools to support teachers in the delivery of rigorous mathematics instruction to all students," Shannon said.
The Rhode Island district plans to implement staff development training for its teachers to effectively integrate the programs in Providence classrooms.
