Junior High School Shares Basics of Mathcasting

A team of teachers and administrators from Doris Miller Junior High School in San Marcos, TX recently conducted a workshop on "mathcasting" at a national conference hosted by the Association for Supervision & Curriculum Development.

Mathcasting frequently takes the form of a video created by the teacher showing how to solve a particular type of math problem. At Miller, according to Principal Susan Brown, mathcasting is enhanced podcasting.

"After the teachers teach hands-on lessons," Brown said, "the students then write a script of what they just learned. This is a great way to reinforce non-fiction writing across the curriculum. The students work in groups and decide how they want to present the material back to the audience in a way to communicate the concept they just learned. Then the students must either draw pictures or take photos that represent their concepts."
