Pearson Launches 'Brief Review' of History for Mobile Devices

Educational publisher Pearson introduced its Brief Review of Global History and Geography app for mobile devices such as Apple iPad and iPhone with demonstrations at this week's FETC 2011 conference in Orlando, FL. The application, available free for download on iTunes, allows students to review history and prepare and practice for exams while on the go, and then to purchase related apps designed to help them improve their knowledge of specific topics.

Brief Review includes an 80-question diagnostic exam covering ancient through modern history, as well as a test review to see their correct and incorrect answers, determine in which areas they are proficient or need improvement, and help them advance their knowledge of topics taught in K-12 social studies courses.

After completing the diagnostic test and review, users can purchase additional apps for more extensive review of particular topics on which they seek to improve or attain mastery. These apps offer a variety of review methods, including:

• Quick Studies: review of "big ideas" using outlines, summaries, and graphic organizers;
• Interactive Flashcards: improving recall and comprehension and building mastery of history's key concepts, terms, people, and places; and
• Quizzes: practice test-taking skills on hundreds of questions, many with primary sources, maps, and other documents.

The mobile apps are a companion, of sorts, to the company's Brief Review Web site, which offers more extensive review of several topics using both multiple choice tests and document-based short answer and essay questions. Brief Review follow-up apps are available for download at the iTunes store for $1.99 each, with discounts offered for multiple purchases in a single order.
